International Women’s Day—Making Things Happen!

Today is International Women’s Day!

Did you know that, for well over 100 years, International Women’s Day has always been commemorated by the color purple?

Purple.

The color of the royals.

But also the color of justice.

Of dignity.

Of women.

So today women all over the world will be presented with purple flowers.

In Brazil, it’s lavender blooms.

In other parts of the world it’s hydrangea or even purple roses.

The annual “Paint It Purple” (use #PaintItPurple) campaign raises awareness about Violence Against Women (VAW) by getting a global audience to ‘paint’ the internet purple.

Chef Chloe RecipeBut the big International Women’s Day theme this year is “Making it Happen”, which is totally fitting.

Because women are always making things happen!

But International Women’s Day is not a day only to commemorate the famous women but all of us. To celebrate where we are now and what we have achieved.

Today, we have female astronauts, prime ministers and CEOs. Girls are welcomed warmly into university. Women can now blend work and family. We have real choices.

It’s not perfect and there are still inequalities. But today is a day to be grateful for the long distance we have all traveled. And to unite in our desire to make it happen so that women across the globe can continue to advance and enjoy full equality.

So share a bouquet of lavender (or your favorite purple flower) and celebrate International Women’s Day in style.
